IAN BARNEY
Senior Consultant
Impact Investment Strategy and Learning
Ian brings 25 years’ experience in the areas of smallholder farming, fair trade, sustainable business models, and the interface between small to large businesses and impact investment. He has led strategic planning processes, living income studies in coffee and tea value chains, research into private sector development aiming at maximising poverty impact, and the design and launch of innovative multi-stakeholder social innovations (e.g. SIWEE ‘social labs’ supporting women’s economic empowerment in Ghana). He contributed to the development of innovative business models and the design of monitoring, evaluation and learning systems. Between 2004 and 2012, he was the managing director of the innovative social enterprise Twin. His style is hands-on, inclusive (seeking to create wider ownership of interventions), and outcome focused (addressing causes and not just symptoms).
