Participatory Market Mapping is a method developed by Practical Action for building a collective map of the value chain with all the stakeholders, including the policies and services affecting the interactions in the chain. This happens in a workshop format that brings together all the different perspectives, and helps stakeholders to build and see the broader market system. This then forms the basis for identifying weaknesses in the system and prioritising action. This is quite illuminating and empowering for marginalised people.

The method can be of great value for

  • the participatory design and construction a systemic Theory of Change for agricultural value chain and market system development initiatives

  • the participatory evaluation and learning in agricultural value chain and market system development initiatives `(e.g. as a tool for participatory data collection and sensemaking with the different stakeholders)
